During the middle ages the voice of the clergy was uniformly ad [sic] often successfully raised against the oppressions and injustice of the great knights and barons, they even obtained certain intervals of intermission from every act of violence. If they did not accomplish more than this we must lament their inability but not condemn their indifference, they were the best landlords, the most merciful the most humane masters and they censured and endeavoured to prevent all cruel and injurious diversions. No country of Europe is more undebted to this influence of the Clergy than England. In the reign of Henri III it was the clergy who secoured the execution of the great charter. Magna Charta itself is partly the work of Stephen Langton, archbischop of Canterbury, and the doctrine of passive obedience as belonging to the orthodox creed was not heard of in this kingdom till Henry VIII had destroyed the privileges of the Clergy, had abolished their influence in the house of Peers, and had arrogated to himself the Spiritual Supremacy. p. 134-135.
Cet ouvrage est assez bon, mais plein de propositions paradoxales. Il est évident qu’il ne prouve pas du tout ce qu’il veut prouver, ce qui est un malheur. Ensuite, il faut convenir que l’esprit aristocratique fait jeter un voile sur bien des misères. Il est malheureux que le peuple soit si peu de chose dans un pareil système. Heureusement que l’on peut modifier certaines choses. L’auteur était protestant, quand il fit ce livrre. Il l’a corrigé et augmenté: le gros in-douze s’est changé en quatre volumes in-8°.
